About the Sparta Education Foundation
The Sparta Education Foundation was founded in 2006 as an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the educational experience for students in Sparta's public schools. The Foundation is governed by an all-volunteer board of trustees comprised of Sparta residents.
We believe that a strong community counts on strong public schools to prepare its children to become productive citizens, strengthen property values, and inspire civic pride. The Sparta Education Foundation is committed to raising vitally important funds to ensure continued excellence in our district and help offset dramatic cuts in state funding for education. To date, we have made grants totaling over $760,000 to our school district.
The Sparta Education Foundation is a member of the New Jersey Education Foundation Partnership and continually seeks new ideas and opportunities that support strong schools, a strong community, and Sparta pride.
SEF Board Meetings
The Sparta Education Foundation meets every month during the school year on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm. For 2016-2017 the meetings will be held at the Alpine School unless otherwise communicated.
History of Local Education Foundations
In California in the late 1970s, voters expressed their frustration with rising taxes by passing Proposition 13 to cap state property tax rates. However, residents soon faced an unintended consequence--dramatic decreases in public funding, which forced schools to slash programs and services.
A grassroots effort began to grow as teachers and community leaders looked for alternative sources of revenue to fund valued school programs. The result was the birth of local education foundations, created and managed by local citizens, which offered a mechanism to generate new streams of revenue to improve education at the local level. Community members embraced the opportunity to fund school programs and play a more active role in the quality and scope of local education.
Around the country, residents in local municipalities have started their own local education foundations to make a positive impact on education in their own community.
