  • VEX Robotics equipment and a Makerbot Education 3D printer starter kit,   February 2020   $9,343

    This grant is for VEX Robotics equipment and a Makerbot Education 3D printer starter kit that brings design, building, 3D printing and robotic programming capabilities to the middle school.

    • 130 Playaway audio book devices to be used in Alpine and Helen Morgan Schools,   November 2019   $5,566

      The Playaway audio book devices will be used in Alpine and Helen Morgan Schools. Playaway devices are about the size of a deck of cards and are preloaded with high-definition audio. There is no downloading to or from the device, and no internet connection is needed.

      • Flexible Seating for 1st grade at Alpine,   September 2019   $11,788

        Classrooms with flexible seating are conducive to both individual, quiet study as well as more collaborative, discussion-based group work. These grants meet curriculum goals because flexible seating encourages individualized learning. Furniture at Alpine School will include rocker chairs, donut balls, bouncy bands, teaming center tables, surf floor desks, active seat cushions, stools and bean bag chairs.

        • Flexible Seating for 4th and 5th grade at HMS,   September 2019   $15,690

          Classrooms with flexible seating are conducive to both individual, quiet study as well as more collaborative, discussion-based group work. Furnishings will include stools, standing height tables with seating, floor cushions, MarkerBoard activity tables, lightweight reading floor rockers, surf-portable writing surfaces and soft modular seating

          • Maker Space and KIBO Robots,   June 2019   $13,395

            The incorporation of a Maker Space and KIBO Robots will give our youngest learners at Alpine exposure to robotics components. The equipment will be introduced into all kindergarten homerooms for daily center use, and our students will be exposed to multiple pathways for learning and problem solving. Our students will use a hands-on approach to work as individuals and as a part of large and small groups.

            • Additions for Community Garden at SHS,   February 2019   $2,214

              This grant will add materials and supplies to the existing garden to support and enhance the multitude of cross curicular skills that are developed through planning, establishing, maintaining, and reflecting on the garden. Materials include: planter boxes,cold frame greenhouse boxes, rain barrel kit, barrel planters, storage containers, and hoses.

              • 30 Google Expeditions Virtual Reality Kits for HMS,   November 2018   $11,065

                The primary purpose for this grant is to provide additional opportunities to expose the students of Helen Morgan to the world of virtual reality as a platform for learning.

                Virtual reality meets the Next Generation Science Standards by having students focus on key practices:

                • identifying challenges and problem solving solutions
                • engaging classmates in discussions about procedures and results
                • conducting experiments following scientific methods
                • recording data, methods, and results

                Virtual reality meets the Social Studies Standards and the vision the district has.

                • Social studies teaching and learning requires effective use of technology, communication, and reading/writing skills that add important dimensions to students' learning.
                • In promoting critical, creative, and ethical thinking on problems faced by citizens and leaders, educators must take care to balance the immediate social environment of students and the larger social world, through examining multiple viewpoints
                • SLA 3D printer for SHS,   June 2018   $6,564

                  This grant is for an SLA 3D printer to expose our students to a variety of 3D printing methods and allow them to print in various materials. Incorporating an SLA 3D printer would not only benefit current STEM engineering students but it will allow us to bring STEM projects to all students who take Architecture & Design courses.

                  • Sound systems for SHS,   June 2018   $11,589
                    • Ukulele program for MAS,   June 2018   $2,106

                      This grant is to start a ukulele program at Mohawk Avenue School. The primary purpose is to expose students to an instrument that will allow them to learn music theory and skills, as well as have a chance to demonstrate those skills both vocally and on an instrument. 

                      • Rowing machines for SHS,   June 2018   $9,090

                        This grant will provide Sparta High School Physical Education/Athletic Department with 10 more rowing machines/ pair of slides to enhance both the PE and Athletic Departments.The primary purpose of this grant is to offer additional opportunities to the students of Sparta High School who are participating in a variety of athletic endeavors that would contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

                        • Robotics equipment replacement/upgrade for SHS,   June 2018   $19,011

                          The purpose of this grant is to replace and upgrade aging and obsolete equipment for the robotics program at the high school. In order for the Sparta Robotics teams to compete on the regional, state, and international levels we must upgrade to the new VEX V5 processor system. It will also upgrade to VEX IQ system. It is a more robust and capable platform for more advanced designing. It is also closely compatible with what is being done at the advanced levels at the high school and so would aide in the educational transition of students who aspire to go on to more challenging things

                          • Year 3 of Chromebooks for SHS,   June 2018   $67,277

                            The purpose of this grant is a continuation of the three-year commitment awarded in June 2016 to bring Chromebooks to high
                            school students. Part of the 1:1 World Initiative connecting each student to a computer; the total amount of the three-year grant is $201,803.

                            • Activity Furniture For Grade 3,   February 2018   $2,077.07

                              Mohawk Avenue School teacher Brianna Reigstad presented a grant for flexible seating options to enhance student engagement and promote collaboration. Balance ball chairs, hokki stools, stability balls, mini carpets and standing desks were requested. Research shows that this type of furniture eliminates restlessness, heightens attention and increases focus levels. Ms. Reigstad said this furniture will also increase mindfulness, which is part of a districtwide initiative.

                              • Genome Editing CRISPR/Cas9 Classroom Kits,   February 2018   $1,000

                                Under the guidance of Ken Scognamiglio, a science teacher at Sparta High School, students Simon Levien and Will Theilacker wrote a grant for CRISPR/Cas9 classroom kits as part of an AP project. This genome editing tool presents a new method of turning on and off genetic traits that is inexpensive, efficient and accurate. Of the few students in Sparta High School who were polled, only about 20% of the population who knew about CRISPR, although many were eager to learn more about the gene editing technology. There is potential to cure diseases like cancer, HIV and others. Plans are in place for AP biology and all biomedical classes use the classroom kits as a major lab.

                                • 10 Lego Mindstorms EV3 Core Sets,   December 2017   $4,464

                                  The ten Lego Mindstorms sets will expose Sparta Middle School STEP students to engineering, coding and robotics, allowing the students to facilitate online and in-person lessons to the entire school population. This grant will also utilize the equipment to start a schoolwide Robotics Club in the 2018-19 school year. The Lego Mindstorm grant also provides students with the first curriculum-based coding/robotics program in the middle school, providing a consistent training platform for the students from elementary through high school.

                                  • 2 Creative Construction Pack Cubelets, Ozobot Classroom Kit and 14 iPads,   December 2017   $11,571

                                    The pack of 56 Cubelets includes Sense, Think and Act Cubelets that incorporate programming challenges. An Ozobot classroom kit supports STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) using skill exercises with the Bit smart robot. These technology items will be used by all Helen Morgan School students. The iPad Air 2s will supplement the use of these grant items.

                                    • 5 Rowing Machines for Physical Education Department,   June 2017   $4,375

                                      The rowing machines promote cardiovascular fitness, are portable, and can easily be moved
                                      outside when weather permits. These machines from Concept 2 meet the curriculum and are a
                                      good fit for all students, including those in the adaptive program.

                                      • 8 Sound Systems for Audio Amplification,   June 2017   $11,587

                                        The Sound Systems are portable, Bluetooth-compatible, and will be used in eight sophomore classrooms.

                                        • Year 2 of Chromebooks,   June 2017   $67,277

                                          The grant represents a continuation of the three-year commitment to bring Chromebooks to high
                                          school students. Part of the 1:1 World Initiative connecting each student to a computer; the
                                          total amount of the three-year grant is $201,803.

                                          • Coral Reef Learning Center,   February 2017   $13,268
                                            • Art & Photo Display Panels,   February 2017   $6,793

                                              The new art display panels will serve all the high school photography, drawing and painting classes. The display equipment includes six folding display panels, each measuring 12-feet wide by 78-inches high. Additionally, the grant funded six folding tabletop display partitions which are each five-feet wide and about three-and-a-half feet tall.

                                              • Google Expeditions Kits,   December 2016   $6,999

                                                These kits will enhance geographic literacy among students and allow them to go on virtual field trips using a view master-type device that interacts with a cell phone to take tours of places ranging from streets in Rome to deep underwater excursions. The entire middle school population will benefit since STEP students will be trained as tour guides on virtual field trips, and they will offer their services to all classroom teachers to make their curriculum more relevant.

                                                • Wonder Workshop Dash & Robot Classroom Pack and 10 iPad Air 2s,   November 2016   $8,561

                                                  This technology introduces robotics and coding to the third grade students. Morgan Bleakley, the Gifted & Talented teacher at Mohawk Avenue School will present this technology to the entire school population, which will be a stepping stone to the Sphero Robotic Balls already in use by Helen Morgan School's fourth and fifth graders.

                                                  • 624 Chromebooks and 24 charging carts,   June 2016   $67,277 (year 1)

                                                    A three-year grant for 624 Chromebooks and 24 charging carts requested by Dr. Daniel Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Staff Development for Sparta School District, for the high school's Science, Math and History classrooms. Part of the 1:World Initiative connecting each student to a computer, the grant request for the first year is $67,276.88, and the total amount of three-year grant is $201,830.

                                                    • Kinesthetic Classroom Furniture for resource level classrooms,   June 2016   $11,305

                                                      A collection of kinesthetic classroom furniture requested by Mary Hassenplug, English/Language Arts Supervisor, for resource level classrooms. This includes eight activity desks, four Fitpro balls with stability legs, four stand-up desks and six pedal desks.

                                                      • HP Chromebooks for Sparta High School,   June 2016   $2,586

                                                        10 HP Chromebooks requested by Renee Dalia for the Special Education English Department's 11th and 12th graders. The Chromebooks will be used for students with moderate disabilities to help them reach their individual goals, improve fine motor skills and benefit from the use of specialized apps.

                                                        • Audio Amplification Systems for Sparta High School,   June 2016   $6,690

                                                          10 Audio Amplification Systems requested by Adrienne Castorino, Supervisor of Special Services. The audio systems will be used in freshmen classrooms.

                                                          • 300-gallon shark and predator aquarium for Sparta High School,   June 2016   $15,067

                                                            300-gallon shark and predator aquarium requested by Ken Sognamiglio, Sparta High School Biology Teacher. This tank will be located in the existing coral reef learning exhibit at the high school's Media Center.

                                                            • Twelve Sphero Balls for the Helen Morgan School,   February 2016   $2,000

                                                              Sphero is the world's first app-controlled robotic ball.  This will introduce students to the world of computer programing.   They wll increase their knowledge of STEM technologies through the Sphero program.

                                                              • Nine More Document Cameras for Helen Morgan School,   February 2016   $4,023.00

                                                                Nine Epson DC-12 document cameras were awarded to the Helen Morgan School for use in all content areas.  They continue to upgrade the classroom technology.

                                                                • 180 Chromebook Computers for 6 SHS Classrooms,   February 2016   $51,359.00

                                                                  Provides the English Department at Sparta High School with 180 Chrombooks to be used in six classrooms.  Teachers will use GAFE to enhance the lessons and education of their students

                                                                  • Yamaha Electric Piano (Clavinova) for the Mohawk Ave Music Room,   December 2015   $1,875.00

                                                                    A grant for the music department at Mohawk Ave School was awarded during the Fall 2015 grant cycle in the amount of $1,875.00 to acquire one Yamaha Clarinova piano for the music classroom.  This will enhance the existing classroom instruction as well as provide the opportunity for additional musical experiences for third grade students.

                                                                                    These 5 Brightlink interactive projectors replace Smartboards that have reached end-of-life at the Sparta Middle School.

                                                                                      These 27 EPSON document cameras integrate current technology into the elementary setting.

                                                                                      • Golf Equipment to Introduce Golf to Middle School Students,   November 2014   $4,374

                                                                                        This golf equipment enhances the physical education program at the Sparta Middle School and gives students the opportunity to learn this sport.

                                                                                          These modern, cuting-edge intruments will inspire budiing musicians with their beautiful sound.

                                                                                            This grant provides industrial grade equipment for the Material Processing, Home Technology and Robotics classes.

                                                                                                      The funding of this grant was a collaboration between the Sparta Music Boosters Inc, and the SEF.  SMBI funded $10,000 and the SEF funded $28,000 in order for the music department at Sparta High School to purchase two new baby grand pianos.
