A Love of Writing

Mrs. Molnar, my 6th grade Language Arts teacher at Sparta Middle School, taught me the essence of writing.  I learned proper grammar in her class.  As I prepared to write my college essays, I looked back at one of my 6th grade English essays for guidance.  The love of writing I learned in that class I carry with me.  I was a contributor all four years of high school for The Oracle, the Sparta High School newspaper.  As a senior, I was Co-Editor-In-Chief.  I was also the secretary of the World Language National Honor Society for Spanish, a member of the National Honor Society, Art Editor for one year at Beginnings, the SHS Literary Magazine, Vice-President of the Student Council for 2 years and Treasurer my senior year.

Artistic Influences

Before high school I loved to draw and paint.  I was always interested in art as my dad is an artist and my mom went to the Fashion Institute of Technology.  As a freshman, I took an Intro to Photography and Graphics class.  From then on, I was hooked.  I continued to take photography classes each year and as a senior I was fortunate to be able to take an Independent Study Photography class.  With the guidance of my teacher, Mrs. Graham, I explored fashion, editorial and portrait photography.  Check out my portfolio website to see more of my photos at isabellacuan.wix.com/cuanphotography.  This past year I was chosen to exhibit at TCNJ.  I was a finalist at the Drexel University Art Contest.  I had an honorable mention in Forum Magazine display of high school and college photographs.  I displayed my work at the Teen Arts Festival at SCCC.  Photography may not be a career direction but it will always be a passion.  I plan to pursue a minor in photography at U Penn.

Switching Directions

As I started my senior year, I was leaning towards a career in fashion or journalism.  Then I entered Mr. Scognamilio's AP Biology class and the trajectory of my future was changed.  He is the reason I am now pursuing science in college and hopefully a career in medicine.  His enthusiasm for teaching Biology and how much he cares for his students in infectious.  He lights up when he is teaching and every new topic is his favorite topic.  I really enjoyed his class.

An Ivy Future

As I started my college search, I visited 15 schools and the last school I visited was The University of Pennsylvania.  I fell in love.  It just felt right.  Philadelphia is a great city and there was a real sense of community.  I am very excited about starting this next chapter and I feel well prepared based on the education I received in the Sparta School District.
