SEF Funds New STEM Initiative

A generous grant by the Sparta Education Foundation (SEF) allowed Sparta Middle School’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teacher Christine Collister to expose her students to a wide variety of hands-on activities.The SEF grant provided her eighth grade Advanced STEM class with kits for lessons on aeronautics, robotics, physical science, sustainable energy and engineering.STEM education at Sparta Middle School focuses on creating 21st century learning opportunities and skill development for students.Funding provided by the SEF offered the eighth graders:Air-powered rockets and glidersHydraulic Robot Arms
Trebuchets (a type of catapult)Solar Ovens
Egg-drop vehicles
Hot air balloonsThe Advanced STEM class was a new class during the 2012/13 school year at Sparta Middle School, and there are plans to offer it to more students next year.The existing curriculum at the middle school includes STEM classes taught by Collister for grades six, seven and eight.The SEF has awarded more than $346,000 in grants to all five of Sparta’s public schools since 2007.The foundation is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to engage the entire community in philanthropic giving that strengthens the public schools, supports teachers, and inspires students
