Calming Corners for Alpine Elementary School, December 2023, $1,626.78

This grant, proposed to the SEF by school counselor Heather Yanoff, cultivates a social emotional learning community at Alpine Elementary School. All kindergarten to second grade students will be included in this project. The students will benefit through access to the calming corner to practice and learn ways to self-regulate.

Exercise Facility/Weight Room Equipment for Sparta High School, December 2023, $48,659.99

Sparta High School Exercise Physiology teacher Ken Scognamiglio petitioned for a grant to build an exercise facility to be used by Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, and sports programs. The exercise facility will contribute to the physical and mental health of all Sparta High School students and allow the exercise physiology program to effectively complete its curriculum

Promethan ActivPanels for Helen Morgan School, December 2023, $26,557.37

This grant, proposed to the SEF by ELA teacher Laura Tedeschi, Special education teacher Ezekiel Cuellar, Band teacher Patricia Curtis, Spanish teacher Marco Vergara, Music teacher Andrea Nigrom NS ELA teacher Donna Huber, provides Promethan ActivPanels boards to help bring instruction to all students.. This will help bring the curriculums to all students through technology, deliver instruction to multiple modalities, and provide a shared interactive learning experience. Through music, art, special education, and general education all of the students of Helen Morgan School benefit from this grant.

Care Cabinet for Sparta High School, March 2023, $2815.24

This grant, proposed to the SEF by School Nurse Alexa Griffin, provides comfort and hygiene care to students at Sparta High School. Products are available to all students who may realize they are in need of hygiene care in the middle of the school day. Since hygiene can affect self-esteem, social skills, and overall student happiness, this grant aims to help lessen student anxiety and worries throughout the school day.

Computers for the Engineering/Architecture Classroom, Sparta High School, January 2023, $32,709.50

This grant supplies new computers to the Engineering, Architecture, and 3D writing classroom at the high school. New machines were needed to support high end software, like CAD (computer aided drawing). In this classroom, students get a professional-level introduction & education, and use programs currently used by many colleges, universities, and firms. Providing the latest technology allows programs to quickly load and respond immediately to demands, freeing up class time & allowing students to truly explore each lesson.

Novels for Math Class, Sparta Middle School, January 2023, $1,479.75

8th grade teacher Rosemary Bayliss petitioned the SEF for this innovative grant, which provides novels for her 8th grade math classes. Students offered this cross-curricular approach will be reading math-based fiction, helping to deepen their understanding of the math lessons learned in class.

Promethean ActivPanels, Mohawk Avenue School, December 2022, $17,802

This grant added five additional Promethean ActivPanels to classrooms at MAS, after ten had been purchased by the district. These screens replace the use of projectors in the classroom. They are brighter, easier to use, load quickly, and have a touch-screen, allowing teachers and students to interact with the boards during lessons. In addition, cameras are embedded in each screen, and were a found to be a very useful tool during virtual learning.

Novels for fourth grade students, Helen Morgan School, December 2022, $7,915.80

Fourth grade teacher Jennifer O’Neill petitioned the SEF for this grant, asking to add a new reading option to district fourth graders. Each class year, students read a novel together, and after using the same novels for several years, teachers were looking for a new text. This grant covers novels for each student in fourth grade.

TI-84 Calculators, Sparta High School, October 2022, $27,699

This grant provides all levels of math classes in the high school with 21 new graphing calculators. These advanced machines hold a longer battery life, and replace outdated calculators that were being used by the entire math department. This grant supports the district’s goal of incorporating technology into the classroom, and gives the most updated technological access to all of Sparta’s student population.

VO2 Master Analyzers, Sparta High School, September 2022, $10,924.10

Sparta High School Science Teacher Kenneth Scognagmilio petitioned the SEF for this innovative grant for his newly introduced Exercise Physiology class, the first of its kind at the high school level in the nation. The VO2 Master Analyzers allow students to measure their VO2 max, helping each to understand the way exercise affects how efficiently their bodies use oxygen. Without these machines, students would need to use a more generalized, and less accurate, method.

Vernier Labquest Minis, Sparta Middle School, September 2022, $5,075.11

This grant provides the 8th grade science classes at Sparta Middle School with 30 additional Labquest Minis, which are utilized in support of the physics and chemistry-based curriculum for all 8th graders. With more machines on hand, students are able to further explore motion/acceleration, force, temperature, pressure, voltage, and sound. The interface connects directly to students’ Chromebooks, and allows students to upload data collected by the Labquest Minis to their computer for analysis and graphing.

Flexible Seating for new behavioral center, Sparta Middle School, June 2022, $16,839.22

In response to the district’s goal of increasing inclusivity, this grant supplies the newly introduced behavioral center at Sparta Middle School with flexible new seating options, like bean bags, bar stools, and lounge chairs. It also provided carpeting, tables, a bookcase, and lighting. Students who have difficulty with the rigid nature of a traditional classroom often find comfort and an ability to stay calm when offered more flexible seating options.

3D Printer for Robotics, Sparta High School, June 2022, $48,785

This grant afforded the Sparta High School STEM department a new Stratasys F190 CR 3D printer, replacing the 10-year-old model the students had been using. Robotics and Engineering students are utilizing the printer throughout the year to expand their studies of the STEM fields. Tools like this help to enable Sparta students for readiness as 21st century engineering majors and in their future careers.

Items for Isak Anderson Studio, Sparta High School, April 2022, $2,043.86

This grant provides updated electronic materials to enhance the technological integrity of the Isak Anderson Recording Studio at Sparta High School. A Native Instruments Maschine, Switchcraft Studiopatch Patch Panel, multi-use studio grade headphones, and new Fat Head short-ribbon microphone were all included in this studio upgrade.

Books for Sparta High School, December 2021 $7,041

This grant is to expand the selection of books in order to support differentiation, diversity, and inclusion and to encourage a lifelong love of reading. This grant helps the department meet the required diversity and inclusion standards. Students will use these books as choice supplemental material to read on their own, in a book club format, or sometimes as a whole class.

Archery Equipment for Helen Morgan School, November 2021 $6,440
The National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) program gives each student the means to succeed, increasing their confidence and helping them gain new abilities. Archery can be a team sport, but also an individual event putting no pressure on students to “win”. This program is all about focus, discipline, patience, and continuing to try and become better at something where if they put the attitude and effort towards it they will get better. Archery promotes health, physical, and emotional well-being in something that can be done out of the classroom. It is an activity that can be promoted throughout our students’ lives and not just while they are in the classrooms.
Flexible Seating for Helen Morgan School, November 2021 $6,342
Classrooms with flexible seating are conducive to both individual, quiet study as well as more collaborative, discussion-based group work, and meet the diverse needs of our students. These grants meet curriculum goals because flexible seating encourages individualized learning. Furniture at Helen Morgan School will include standing desks, soft seat stools, and wobble chairs.
Two 3D Printers, Sparta Middle School, May 2020 $4,045

Two MakerBot Replicator + 3D printers will keep Sparta Middle School students at the forefront of educational
technology. Most sixth and seventh grade students at the middle school participate in a nine-week STEM course which enables them to sharpen their problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. 3D printing is widely used in the fields of architecture, education, medicine, manufacturing, aeronautics, military and food preparation. By familiarizing students with 3D printing and the design process, they are exposed to a diverse range of career possibilities.

Diverse Books and Playaway Audiobooks, May 2020 $5,006

This grant supports the Eighth Grade English Language Arts classrooms with high interest diverse books and Playaway audiobook devices to accomplish the 1,000 Book Challenge, a competition among the three Eighth Grade learning teams. After reading a book, students create a ‘shelfie’ with their picture and a non-Googleable answer to one of the following questions: “What is something new your book taught you about the world or people living in it?” or “How did you see yourself reflected in the lives of the characters or individuals who are different from you?”

20 Playaway Audiobooks, Sparta High School, May 2020 $1,335

The grant provides non-distracting audio options for curricular-assigned books. The book list directly correlates to available titles in Grades 9-12. The Playaways are self-contained audiobook devices that offer students an additional way to read and understand curricular literature. All English Department curriculum novels and books will be available for students to check out from the high school’s Media Center. Teachers will also have the ability to borrow these devices to support in-class lessons and promote literature.

Google Expeditions Kits, Sparta High School, May 2020 $9,749

Google Expeditions to allow students to travel the globe using virtual or augmented reality tours. Destinations include historical places, outer space, college campuses, inside volcanoes and the ocean floor. Teachers and guidance counselors can use them in all classrooms at any time, drawing on content from social studies, English/language arts, the arts and science. Experiencing places outside of the classroom can foster a love of learning and an appreciation for other cultures as students begin to feel they are truly global citizens.

Supplemental Learning Tools, Helen Morgan and Mohawk Avenue Schools, April 2020 $25,535

This grant provides a focused, intensive approach to developing reading skills. It utilizes text sets to meet the needs of learners in a collaborative manner. It will fund StartUp Phonics Skill Bag bundles for students in grade one. A custom book list providing multiple sets of books will be used for book clubs in for Grade 5.

40 Playaway Audiobooks, Mohawk Avenue Schools, April 2020 $1,914

Playaway audiobooks promote independent reading for third grade students. Teachers help students choose books in a particular genre or a vehicle to analyze authors’ writing styles. The entire book is narrated on the Playaway device and the listener can control the speed of the narrator. Playaway devices are checked out from the Media Center and can be brought home by students, making the home and school connection even stronger. Book titles are grade level appropriate and include high interest stories.

Aquarium Upgrades, Sparta High School, April 2020 $4,314

The Coral Reef Active Learning Center at the Sparta High School Media Center teaches concepts in biology, chemistry, anatomy, environmental science, marine biology, photography and art, among others. The Learning Center includes a 150-gallon coral reef aquarium, 300-galloon apex predator aquarium, and multiple displays. The two aquariums are in need of some general maintenance, repair and restocking. This grant supplies items like new coral, sea anemones, invertebrates and fish including a new stingray for the predator tank.

VEX Robotics equipment and a Makerbot Education 3D printer starter kit, February 2020 $9,343

This grant is for VEX Robotics equipment and a Makerbot Education 3D printer starter kit that brings design, building, 3D printing and robotic programming capabilities to the middle school.

130 Playaway audio book devices to be used in Alpine and Helen Morgan Schools, November 2019 $5,566

The Playaway audio book devices will be used in Alpine and Helen Morgan Schools. Playaway devices are about the size of a deck of cards and are preloaded with high-definition audio. There is no downloading to or from the device, and no internet connection is needed.

Flexible Seating for 1st grade at Alpine, September 2019 $11,788

Classrooms with flexible seating are conducive to both individual, quiet study as well as more collaborative, discussion-based group work. These grants meet curriculum goals because flexible seating encourages individualized learning. Furniture at Alpine School will include rocker chairs, donut balls, bouncy bands, teaming center tables, surf floor desks, active seat cushions, stools and bean bag chairs.

Flexible Seating for 4th and 5th grade at HMS, September 2019 $15,690

Classrooms with flexible seating are conducive to both individual, quiet study as well as more collaborative, discussion-based group work. Furnishings will include stools, standing height tables with seating, floor cushions, MarkerBoard activity tables, lightweight reading floor rockers, surf-portable writing surfaces and soft modular seating.

Maker Space and KIBO Robots, June 2019 $13,395

The incorporation of a Maker Space and KIBO Robots will give our youngest learners at Alpine exposure to robotics components. The equipment will be introduced into all kindergarten homerooms for daily center use, and our students will be exposed to multiple pathways for learning and problem solving. Our students will use a hands-on approach to work as individuals and as a part of large and small groups.

Additions for Community Garden at SHS, February 2019 $2,214

This grant will add materials and supplies to the existing garden to support and enhance the multitude of cross curicular skills that are developed through planning, establishing, maintaining, and reflecting on the garden. Materials include: planter boxes,cold frame greenhouse boxes, rain barrel kit, barrel planters, storage containers, and hoses.

30 Google Expeditions Virtual Reality Kits for HMS, November 2018 $11,065

    The primary purpose for this grant is to provide additional opportunities to expose the students of Helen Morgan to the world of virtual reality as a platform for learning. Virtual reality meets the Next Generation Science Standards by having students focus on key practices:

  • identifying challenges and problem solving solutions
  • engaging classmates in discussions about procedures and results
  • conducting experiments following scientific methods
  • recording data, methods, and results Virtual reality meets the Social Studies Standards and the vision the district has.
  • Social studies teaching and learning requires effective use of technology, communication, and reading/writing skills that add important dimensions to students’ learning.
  • In promoting critical, creative, and ethical thinking on problems faced by citizens and leaders, educators must take care to balance the immediate social environment of students and the larger social world, through examining multiple viewpoints
SLA 3D printer for SHS, June 2018 $6,564

This grant is for an SLA 3D printer to expose our students to a variety of 3D printing methods and allow them to print in various materials. Incorporating an SLA 3D printer would not only benefit current STEM engineering students but it will allow us to bring STEM projects to all students who take Architecture & Design courses.

Ukulele program for MAS, June 2018 $2,106

This grant is to start a ukulele program at Mohawk Avenue School. The primary purpose is to expose students to an instrument that will allow them to learn music theory and skills, as well as have a chance to demonstrate those skills both vocally and on an instrument.

Rowing machines for SHS, June 2018 $9,090

This grant will provide Sparta High School Physical Education/Athletic Department with 10 more rowing machines/ pair of slides to enhance both the PE and Athletic Departments.The primary purpose of this grant is to offer additional opportunities to the students of Sparta High School who are participating in a variety of athletic endeavors that would contribute to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Robotics equipment replacement/upgrade for SHS, June 2018 $19,011

The purpose of this grant is to replace and upgrade aging and obsolete equipment for the robotics program at the high school. In order for the Sparta Robotics teams to compete on the regional, state, and international levels we must upgrade to the new VEX V5 processor system. It will also upgrade to VEX IQ system. It is a more robust and capable platform for more advanced designing. It is also closely compatible with what is being done at the advanced levels at the high school and so would aide in the educational transition of students who aspire to go on to more challenging things

Year 3 of Chromebooks for SHS, June 2018 $67,277

The purpose of this grant is a continuation of the three-year commitment awarded in June 2016 to bring Chromebooks to high school students. Part of the 1:1 World Initiative connecting each student to a computer; the total amount of the three-year grant is $201,803.

Activity Furniture For Grade 3, February 2018 $2,077.07

Mohawk Avenue School teacher Brianna Reigstad presented a grant for flexible seating options to enhance student engagement and promote collaboration. Balance ball chairs, hokki stools, stability balls, mini carpets and standing desks were requested. Research shows that this type of furniture eliminates restlessness, heightens attention and increases focus levels. Ms. Reigstad said this furniture will also increase mindfulness, which is part of a districtwide initiative.

Genome Editing CRISPR/Cas9 Classroom Kits, February 2018 $1,000

Under the guidance of Ken Scognamiglio, a science teacher at Sparta High School, students Simon Levien and Will Theilacker wrote a grant for CRISPR/Cas9 classroom kits as part of an AP project. This genome editing tool presents a new method of turning on and off genetic traits that is inexpensive, efficient and accurate. Of the few students in Sparta High School who were polled, only about 20{2b1dfe12867cfecc4d72bd9c6ff705a9929554caa46f0985d1a77982dcdde883} of the population who knew about CRISPR, although many were eager to learn more about the gene editing technology. There is potential to cure diseases like cancer, HIV and others. Plans are in place for AP biology and all biomedical classes use the classroom kits as a major lab.

10 Lego Mindstorms EV3 Core Sets, December 2017 $4,464

The ten Lego Mindstorms sets will expose Sparta Middle School STEP students to engineering, coding and robotics, allowing the students to facilitate online and in-person lessons to the entire school population. This grant will also utilize the equipment to start a schoolwide Robotics Club in the 2018-19 school year. The Lego Mindstorm grant also provides students with the first curriculum-based coding/robotics program in the middle school, providing a consistent training platform for the students from elementary through high school.

2 Creative Construction Pack Cubelets, Ozobot Classroom Kit and 14 iPads, December 2017 $11,571

The pack of 56 Cubelets includes Sense, Think and Act Cubelets that incorporate programming challenges. An Ozobot classroom kit supports STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) using skill exercises with the Bit smart robot. These technology items will be used by all Helen Morgan School students. The iPad Air 2s will supplement the use of these grant items.

5 Rowing Machines for Physical Education Department, June 2017 $4,375

The rowing machines promote cardiovascular fitness, are portable, and can easily be moved outside when weather permits. These machines from Concept 2 meet the curriculum and are a good fit for all students, including those in the adaptive program.

8 Sound Systems for Audio Amplification, June 2017 $11,587

The Sound Systems are portable, Bluetooth-compatible, and will be used in eight sophomore classrooms.

Art & Photo Display Panels, February 2017 $6,793

The new art display panels will serve all the high school photography, drawing and painting classes. The display equipment includes six folding display panels, each measuring 12-feet wide by 78-inches high. Additionally, the grant funded six folding tabletop display partitions which are each five-feet wide and about three-and-a-half feet tall.

Google Expeditions Kits, December 2016 $6,999

These kits will enhance geographic literacy among students and allow them to go on virtual field trips using a view master-type device that interacts with a cell phone to take tours of places ranging from streets in Rome to deep underwater excursions. The entire middle school population will benefit since STEP students will be trained as tour guides on virtual field trips, and they will offer their services to all classroom teachers to make their curriculum more relevant.

Wonder Workshop Dash & Robot Classroom Pack and 10 iPad Air 2s, November 2016 $8,561

This technology introduces robotics and coding to the third grade students. Morgan Bleakley, the Gifted & Talented teacher at Mohawk Avenue School will present this technology to the entire school population, which will be a stepping stone to the Sphero Robotic Balls already in use by Helen Morgan School’s fourth and fifth graders.

624 Chromebooks and 24 charging carts, June 2016 $67,277 (year 1)

A three-year grant for 624 Chromebooks and 24 charging carts requested by Dr. Daniel Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Staff Development for Sparta School District, for the high school’s Science, Math and History classrooms. Part of the 1:World Initiative connecting each student to a computer, the grant request for the first year is $67,276.88, and the total amount of three-year grant is $201,830.

Kinesthetic Classroom Furniture for resource level classrooms, June 2016 $11,305

A collection of kinesthetic classroom furniture requested by Mary Hassenplug, English/Language Arts Supervisor, for resource level classrooms. This includes eight activity desks, four Fitpro balls with stability legs, four stand-up desks and six pedal desks.

HP Chromebooks for Sparta High School, June 2016 $2,586

10 HP Chromebooks requested by Renee Dalia for the Special Education English Department’s 11th and 12th graders. The Chromebooks will be used for students with moderate disabilities to help them reach their individual goals, improve fine motor skills and benefit from the use of specialized apps.

Audio Amplification Systems for Sparta High School, June 2016 $6,690

10 Audio Amplification Systems requested by Adrienne Castorino, Supervisor of Special Services. The audio systems will be used in freshmen classrooms.

300-gallon shark and predator aquarium for Sparta High School, June 2016 $15,067

300-gallon shark and predator aquarium requested by Ken Sognamiglio, Sparta High School Biology Teacher. This tank will be located in the existing coral reef learning exhibit at the high school’s Media Center.

Twelve Sphero Balls for the Helen Morgan School, February 2016 $2,000

Sphero is the world’s first app-controlled robotic ball. This will introduce students to the world of computer programing. They wll increase their knowledge of STEM technologies through the Sphero program.

Nine More Document Cameras for Helen Morgan School, February 2016 $4,023.00

Nine Epson DC-12 document cameras were awarded to the Helen Morgan School for use in all content areas. They continue to upgrade the classroom technology.

180 Chromebook Computers for 6 SHS Classrooms, February 2016 $51,359.00

Provides the English Department at Sparta High School with 180 Chrombooks to be used in six classrooms. Teachers will use GAFE to enhance the lessons and education of their students

Yamaha Electric Piano (Clavinova) for the Mohawk Ave Music Room, December 2015 $1,875.00

A grant for the music department at Mohawk Ave School was awarded during the Fall 2015 grant cycle in the amount of $1,875.00 to acquire one Yamaha Clarinova piano for the music classroom. This will enhance the existing classroom instruction as well as provide the opportunity for additional musical experiences for third grade students.

The funding of this grant was a collaboration between the Sparta Music Boosters Inc, and the SEF. SMBI funded $10,000 and the SEF funded $28,000 in order for the music department at Sparta High School to purchase two new baby grand pianos.
